The tranquil surroundings of the De Hollandsche Molen resort in Franschhoek have been overshadowed by a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns about safety and inclusivity within this popular camping destination. Following an alleged racial assault on December 21, the resort has heightened security measures in a bid to restore trust among its patrons.
The ordeal began when a family, regular visitors for over five years, was camping at the resort. Their anticipated stay from December 16 to December 23 was abruptly cut short after an encounter that had sparked accusations of “unfair and racist treatment.” The family contends that, historically, they have faced unwarranted hostility from some campers who allegedly made their children feel unwelcome and intimidated on multiple occasions.
In a heartfelt social media post detailing the incident, the family member described a harrowing confrontation where their 19-year-old nephew was reportedly choked and dragged by another camper for supposedly accessing a path deemed off-limits. This assault, witnessed by two young girls, sent shockwaves through the family, leading the girls to seek help from their relatives.
“As we approached the area, other white campers, all buddies of the assailant, protected him and started choking us as well,” the patron recounted. In the ensuing chaos, the family sought assistance from resort management, only to feel marginalized when they were seemingly dismissed and escorted from the premises like “naughty kids” while the alleged assailant remained on site.
The patron expressed sadness and disillusionment at the resort's response, stating, “My nephew, nieces, and the rest of the family are traumatised, hurt, and utterly devastated at this racial attack on us.” He further reported that they had to hurriedly pack their belongings in the dark after an agreement was reached to vacate the camp, only to discover that the assailant had not been held to the same standard and was allowed to remain.
The family has since lodged an official complaint with the Franschhoek SAPS, who confirmed they are investigating a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk noted that no arrests have been made as of yet.
In response to the incident, De Hollandsche Molen resort issued a statement acknowledging the incident as “unfortunate and isolated,” noting that such behaviour was highly uncharacteristic of the family-oriented environment the resort has maintained for many decades. They clarified that no resort personnel were involved and that staff acted professionally to de-escalate the situation without taking sides.
“The company has no record of any complaints received regarding the restriction or prohibition of access to specific areas of the resort prior to this incident,” the statement read. .
