The Durban Chamber Choir plan two dynamic concerts in Durban and Pietermaritzburg

KZN music lovers are in for a feast of classical music around the province over the next two weeks.

The Durban Chamber Choir celebrates the joy of choral singing in two vibrant concerts. The first is in Pietermaritzburg at the Hayfields Lutheran Church of the Cross tomorrow at 3pm.

The choir presents an uplifting and eclectic programme which includes the elegant Messe Brève by Charles Gounod; Baba Yetu (Our Father) by celebrated Xhosa hymn writer John Knox Bokwe and the iconic Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.

The choir has been in existence for over 20 years with a wide-ranging repertoire from early plainchant to contemporary choral. It is made up of voluntary members of all ages and from all walks of life and is conducted by Margriet Deppe, co-principal oboe and cor anglais at the KZN Philharmonic and an acclaimed organist.

The second concert brings the music home to Durban on Sunday, 7 June 2026 at 3pm at St Thomas Anglican Church, Musgrave, Durban.

This weekend Friends of Music presents on of SA’s leading concert pianists in a recital at the Durban Jewish Centre on Sunday May 24 at 2.30pm

He has served as musical director/repetiteur/chorus master for over 100 productions of opera, musicals, and ballet. He is lecturer in Piano and Music History, Head of Western Classical Performance Studies, and resident accompanist at the UKZN School of Music. 

The programme includes Beethoven’s famed “Appassionata” or Piano Sonata in F minor Op 57, Debussy’s Estampes; Schumann’s Piano Sonata no 2 in G minor Op 22 and Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata no 3 in A minor Op 28.

Mandisi Dyantis will perform with the KZN Philharmonic next weekend.

This week also features a unique collaboration between Mandisi Dyantis and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at the Playhouse Opera on May 29 and 30 at 7.30pm.

Called “Symphonic Celebration”, the concert features the compositions and powerful voice of Mandisi accompanied by his regular band and singers, plus the rich sound of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra. The arrangements include some of Mandisi's most beautiful songs like “Cwaka” and “Somandla” and “Intlambululu”. Tickets R435 to R615 from webtickets.

Cape Town soprano Lynelle Kenned will perform with Baroque 2000 next Sunday

Finally Baroque 2000 hosts at concert at the St James Church, Morningside, next Sunday May 31 at 11.30am

It features Cape Town soprano Lynelle Kenned in a rendition of operatic arias with flute obligato, with Sabine Baird on flute.

Kenned, graduated from the UCT Opera School under the tutelage of Prof Virginia Davids, and is a multidisciplinary performing artist, TV presenter, corporate MC, actress and media personality. Awards include a 2018 Naledi Award 2018 and Fleur du Cap Award in 2016.

The programme includes Handel’s Rinaldo Overture, followed by a series of soprano arias: 

Handel's “Sweet Bird”, Antonia Padoani Bembo’s "O del Celtico scettro"; Vivaldi’s “Sol da te, mio dolce amore” and Charpentier’s "Sans frayeur dans ce bois". It finished with Handel’s  Concerto Grosso Op6 No11 in A Major.
