Residents of the KZN South Coast are reaping the benefits of an incredible subtropical climate, where outdoor lifestyles are not just a choice but a way of life — no matter the age. Among those leading the charge are senior citizens who have discovered that mountain biking, or trail biking, is not only a source of fun and community connection but also a gateway to healthy ageing.

“Cycling is one of the most rewarding forms of exercise for older adults, and it’s incredibly accessible on the KZN South Coast,” says Barto van der Merwe, managing director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of JSE-listed Crookes Brothers Limited. He highlights a growing trend of seniors embracing trail biking for its multifaceted benefits, which extend beyond physical fitness to include social engagement and a deeper connection with nature.

Physical and Mental Advantages of Cycling

Research consistently shows that regular cycling offers long-term benefits for older adults, including:

  • Improved heart health
  • Strengthening muscles and joints without high impact
  • Enhancing balance and co-ordination
  • Supporting weight management
  • Boosting mental well-being
  • Encouraging social integration and connection

A growing cycling community

At the forefront of this movement is Richard Alkins, a resident of the Scottburgh-based mature lifestyle estate Renishaw Hills, where he has lived for over seven years. An avid cyclist and one of the estate's biggest trail ambassadors, Richard began his cycling journey about eight years ago but found his true passion as he engaged with other riders during and after the Covid pandemic.

“There are about 40 to 45 kilometres of trails around Renishaw Hills,” Richard explains, highlighting the diverse assortment of track types sprawled through natural bush. “Much of the trail is single-track that provides welcome shade on hot days. The sections vary in length and skill level, making it accessible to all regular cyclists, just at your own pace.”

The popular routes include Mamba Alley, Renishaw First Climb, Simo’s Switchbacks, and the newly developing Supertubes trail. This variety keeps riders engaged and excited, providing something fresh for every outing.

Richard is part of an informal cycling group of around 16 members, many of whom also belong to the Scottburgh Cycling Club. The group embodies a supportive, community-driven spirit, with participants actively involved in the management and maintenance of the estate.

“If you have a bike and you’re there on time, you’re welcome to join!” Richard says, emphasising their inclusive approach. “We encourage new riders to join experienced cyclists before venturing out alone, helping them get local advice on bikes and equipment.”

Plans for Future Growth of the Sport

The burgeoning popularity of trail biking is set to grow even further with the launch of an on-site bicycle shop at the entrance to Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh, part of the 1,300-hectare mixed-use development called Renishaw Coastal Precinct. Future plans include extending the local biking trails, which will provide additional options for both senior citizens and cycling aficionados alike.

Significant attention will spotlight the rising interest in trail biking at the upcoming Renishaw Solstice Race slated for Saturday, June 20, starting from Crocworld. Hosted by the Scottburgh Cycling Club, this event is part of the KZN Super Classic Series and includes various mountain biking races and a trail run.
