The kidneys perform a host of critical functions that many of us take for granted. From filtering blood and removing toxins to regulating blood pressure and supporting bone health, these vital organs play a key role in maintaining overall wellbeing. Yet, as pharmacist Tlangelani Siwele from Medipost Pharmacy reminds us, kidney disease can strike without warning, making knowledge about kidney health essential for everyone.
“Our kidneys clean our blood, removing toxins and excess fluid, and turn this waste into urine,” explains Siwele. “But that’s just the start; they also support red blood cell production, produce hormones, and balance our electrolyte levels.” These functions are crucial yet often go unnoticed until issues arise.
"Kidney disease can manifest unexpectedly, often without clear symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The symptoms of advanced kidney disease can be vague,” notes Siwele. “Frequent tiredness, swollen feet or ankles, reduced urine output, nausea, and diminished concentration are all indicators.” Without timely medical attention, both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease can be life-threatening.
“Acute kidney failure can occur suddenly, often linked to severe infections, dehydration, or blockages, and it may be reversible,” she adds. “Chronic kidney disease, however, is often a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management, including potential kidney transplants.”
Taking proactive steps to protect kidney function today can have a profound impact on health in the future. Siwele highlights the importance of early detection and management: “Kidney problems often start with chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which can be silent. Regular check-ups are vital, especially if you have a family history of these diseases.”
“It’s crucial to manage underlying conditions like diabetes and hypertension effectively,” Siwele emphasises.”
She also notes the value of a holistic approach to kidney health, stressing that “a healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the progression to end-stage renal failure, thus avoiding the need for dialysis.” This approach includes maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and adhering to dietary guidelines.
For those already facing kidney issues, Siwele advises vigilance. “Anyone with compromised kidney health should consult their doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medication, as certain drugs can be harmful.”
“People often underestimate the hard work our kidneys do until their function is at risk. Awareness and prevention are key, but we are here to support patients at every stage of kidney disease.”
