The National Consumer Commission has issued a critical recall of Spraymate Cold Galvanising Spray Paint, affecting consumers across South Africa and neighbouring countries.

According to the NCC, the spray is used to protect steel products from rust and corrosion.

"The affected products were made available for sale nationwide and exported to neighbouring countries, including Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe," the NCC said in a statement.

As per Rust-Oleum South Africa, the recall affects certain batches with a defective seam weld on the canister.

"This defect is caused by a manufacturing irregularity during the production process. Under specific conditions, the compromised seam may fail to uphold the necessary internal pressure integrity, thereby increasing the risk of an unexpected and uncontrolled discharge of the aerosol canister’s contents." Rust-Oleum South Africa explained.

It said if the seam weld fails, the container experiences a loss of pressure integrity causing it to forcefully discharge the spray.

Affected batches

Batch 2116 – Production Date: May 9,2025 | Expiry Date: May 9, 2030

Batch 2223 – Production Date: July 2, 2025 | Expiry Date: July 2, 2030

Batch 2381 – Production Date: September 9, 2025 | Expiry Date: September 9, 2030

Consumers are urged to return the affected canisters to the stores they were purchased from. The supplier will also, where applicable, cover costs associated with returning the product.
