The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing the rehabilitation of Bayhead Road at the Port of Durban, a month ahead of schedule. This timely finish comes just in time for the bustling festive season, ensuring smooth and efficient cargo movement for South African consumers.

The project, which began in June 2025 and was originally set for a six-month timeline, aims to alleviate traffic congestion by providing uninterrupted access to essential port terminals, warehouses, and industrial facilities.

Bayhead Road serves as a vital link between the Port of Durban and the national road network, enhancing efficient supply chains and strengthening the country’s trade competitiveness.

The refurbishment, which cost R76 million, has made the roadway resilient to the daily passage of approximately 13,000 vehicles.

Key improvements include enhanced durability against cracking and deformation, significantly extending the road’s design lifespan while concurrently reducing long-term maintenance expenses.

Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, Port Manager at the Port of Durban, expressed optimism about the benefits this infrastructure development will bring to South Africa’s logistics sector.

“We are looking forward to seeing South Africa’s logistics sector enjoying the benefits of this road infrastructure development. The successful execution of this project reinforces our commitment to deliver on the business-wide Reinvent for Growth strategy, by creating value for our port users through seamless cargo flow. Key to this success is collaboration with our stakeholders,” she stated.

The upgrade of Bayhead Road is expected to be transformative for the economic landscape of KwaZulu-Natal. During the construction phase, the project generated approximately 204 job opportunities and provided critical support to five Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), highlighting the broader economic benefits tied to infrastructure improvements.
