Postbank has announced that cash deposits, withdrawals and related services will no longer be available at South African Post Office (SAPO) branches from May 1, 2026.

Customers who previously used SAPO branches to access their Postbank accounts will be required to use the bank’s new and expanded banking channels.

The bank said social grant beneficiaries will not be affected by the change. Recipients of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grants will continue to receive payments as usual through existing channels, including retailers and ATMs.

Postbank said the move forms part of its broader strategy to improve customer experience and expand access to modern, community-based banking services. It also marks the completion of its multi-year transition away from SAPO branches, following the migration of social grant payments in March 2023.

Over the past three years, Postbank has invested more than R500 million in technology and infrastructure to support improved and more reliable services.

Postbank chief commercial officer Thamsanqa Cele said the shift is aimed at strengthening financial inclusion and improving access to banking services closer to communities.

From May 1, Postbank savings account customers will be able to access deposit and withdrawal services through Standard Bank as well as participating retailers.
