“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
This is a quote by American writer, William Arthur Ward, which Provincial MEC for Education, David Maynier referred to as the province announced its 15 top teachers at the 2025 Western Cape Provincial Teaching Awards on Friday.
Kerry Mauchline spokesperson for Maynier said these awards were an opportunity to recognise the outstanding work teachers have done for the year, and to celebrate the teaching profession in the province.
The event was held at The Westin Cape Town, where the top three positions for each category were announced.

Maynier said the teachers were a true example of inspiration for children: “What could be greater than inspiring our children, who are the future of our country?
“And so in preparing to address you this evening, I had a look at a few other quotes that sum up the importance of teachers in our society.
“And they reveal two very important things we need to do for our teachers:
“We must develop our teachers, because when we develop our teachers, we develop our children.
Leon van Wyk, MPP - DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Education said the awards were significant because it included several female educators during Women’s Month.
“This Women’s Month, it is particularly inspiring to note that of the 15 awards presented, 13 were received by women. This highlights the central role women continue to play in driving education forward in our province and across South Africa,” he stated.
“We also extend special acknowledgement to the teachers from the Eden and Central Karoo Education District, who received the most awards in the evening – an encouraging sign of the quality of teaching across all parts of the province.”
