The community of Hanover Park are outraged by the sickening act of animal cruelty after five cats were found beheaded.

Kashiefa Mohammed, Hanover Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) Media Officer, said the cats were found in Lansur Road on Tuesday.

“Whoever did that, it is animal cruelty and a cruel thing to do to animals," she said.

"Why would a person chop off an animal's head?

“An animal is only there for your comfort and to cuddle. An animal doesn’t do bad things to you. A cat is just a humble animal."

Mohammed said the perpetrators should serve a prison sentence instead of facing a fine.

She added that if they could harm an animal, what could they do to a human being.

The cats were discovered moments before gunfire in the area as rival gangs waged war against one another.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA told the Cape Argus' sister newspaper, the Daily Voice that they are aware of the incident and that an investigation was under way.

“We welcome any information which can be given anonymously by calling 021 700 4158/9 any time of the day or night or via Whatsapp to 021 700 4140 or email inspectorate@spca-ct.co.za," they said.

This is the second gruesome incident involving cat killings in Cape Town this year, following the arrest of a man in Freedom Park, Ottery in June.

A joint operation between SAPS and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA saw authorities nab the 29-year-old suspect inside his home.

Authorities received a tip-off after it was alleged that the suspect had killed more than five cats over a period of a few months by suffocating the animals.
