Mandla Mandela shared a powerful message to his wife and children, announcing he was coming home, after being detained by Israeli forces while participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the siege.
In a video shared by his wife, Nosekeni Rabia Mandela, he appeared resilient and in good spirits alongside fellow activists, despite their ordeal.
"This is Nkosi Zwelivelile on the Jordanian galaxy. Can you hear me? We are reporting that all our comrades, brothers and sisters on the GSF are safe and on their way home," Mandela said. "Upon their arrival in their home countries will give media briefings."
He also took the time to reassure his wife and children that he is indeed coming home.
"To anyone receiving this message, please tell my wife that I am coming home. She must tell my kids, Mandela, Rolihlahla, and Nonhlanhla that daddy is coming home. Looking forward to seeing you all. Inshallah."
His wife expressed elation when the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) confirmed that the activists would be repatriated.
"I am grateful beyond words for the relentless dedication of the GSF legal team, Adalah, the local GSF support crew, and Dirco," she said. "Their tireless efforts secured the release of the South African delegation."
The South African activists were cleared for release following diplomatic engagement between South African and Israeli authorities.
"Hearing that my husband is finally coming home fills my heart with pure joy, tears of relief, love, and gratitude. I can't wait to hold you again, my love; see you soon."
The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) has confirmed the safe arrival of South African participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in Jordan, ahead of their scheduled return to South Africa on Tuesday.
"The Department of International Relations and Co-operation confirms the safe arrival of the Flotilla activists in Jordan. Our Ambassador, Her Excellency Tselane Mokuena, was present to receive the delegation on behalf of the Republic," Dirco spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri said.
The South African government emphasised that its role in the process was primarily diplomatic, facilitating engagement with all relevant parties.
"We have noted deliberate misinformation related to government's role in this process. The delegation's return is being facilitated with the financial support of their families and solidarity groups," Phiri added.
Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ronald Lamola, also reiterated the government's gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the safe return of the delegation through their cooperation and support.
"I hereby confirm the release of Dr Fatima Hendricks, Mandla Mandela, Reaaz Moola, Carrie Shelver, Dr Zaheera Soomar and Zukiswa Wanner," Lamola said. "They were all involved in a noble cause for humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. We continue to call for all fights to seize."
The activists are scheduled to arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport at 09:30am on Wednesday morning, marking the end of a tense period following their detention in Israel after participating in the Gaza-bound flotilla.
