Eight learners from Milnerton High School have been suspended after a bullying incident captured on video went viral on social media on Tuesday.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed that the pupils will face disciplinary hearings following the assault, which has drawn widespread condemnation.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the school acted quickly after becoming aware of the incident.

“The school is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves and has acted upon the allegations and video that has emerged,” she said.

According to the department, the school launched an internal investigation, identified those involved, and suspended eight learners as a precaution while the disciplinary process unfolds.

Counselling and psychosocial support are being offered to those affected.

Hammond urged the public not to share the video, saying that doing so “exacerbates the trauma experienced by the victim” and infringes on the rights and dignity of minors.

The incident comes as the school’s Grade 12 learners are writing their matric exams.

“Every effort is being made to ensure that all learners are able to write their exams in a calm and secure environment,” Hammond added.

The WCED said it remains in close contact with the school and will ensure appropriate action is taken in line with departmental policies and the law.
