Clinton “Duiwel” Moses, a parolee, appeared for the second time at the Goodwood Magistrates' Court on charges of murdering his girlfriend, Hermalise Wenn, who was the mother of their three-year-old child.

Meanwhile, her family faced the heartbreaking task of identifying her body.

Wenn, was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death by Moses, 35, on October19, despite having a protection order against him.

She was rushed to the Elsies River Day Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The family of Wenn described Moses as jealous, abusive and controlling.

Wenn, who was a healthcare worker, had tried to break off their relationship.

When she tried to do so, she was allegedly threatened by Moses who apparently said: “Ek gaan jou vrek maak.”(I am going to kill you)

Family and friends showed up to court wearing sweaters with Wenn's photograph printed on it and heard the case was postponed to December 9 as Moses abandoned his bail application.

Wenn’s cousin Lee-Ann Stander was not able to be at the court case as she had to identify her cousin's body at the mortuary.

But said that she is pleased that Moses will stay behind bars, explaining: “We are happy. Some of the family and community feels that he must come out [for revenge].

“Her father is OK for now as well as her sister and her eldest son but her baby boy is asking for his mom. The funeral is next Saturday.”

Moses is currently out on parole following a 10-year sentence involving the stabbing of a young man in the same community.

In attendance and supporting the family was the Callas Foundation, which runs a support group for women who seek assistance from domestic violence as well as substance abuse.

Lynette Dixon of the foundation said: "Our representatives handed over a petition opposing bail and calling for the accused to remain in custody.

“The accused abandoned his bail application, as he is currently on parole for a pending criminal matter.

“The Callas Foundation welcomes the decision for the accused to remain in custody and remains committed to supporting victims and families affected by gender-based violence and femicide.
