A dramatic river rescue unfolded at the Goukou River Mouth when a local teenager, caught in powerful outgoing Spring tide currents, was pulled from danger thanks to the quick actions of a Good Samaritan armed with an NSRI pink rescue buoy.
NSRI Stilbaai station commander Stéfan Grové said the NSRI crew, preparing for routine training at the station, were activated at 17h51 following eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress.
According to Grové, the teenager had entered the river to retrieve family beach toys, including a beach ball, when he was caught in strong currents and swept out to sea.
Local resident Pieter van Niekerk reacted swiftly, grabbing an NSRI pink rescue buoy stationed on the shoreline. “He reached the teenager and used the buoy to keep him afloat while they were carried further out to sea,” Grové said. Van Niekerk then swam the teenager toward the shore until they were met by an NSRI Stilbaai JetRIB rescue craft.
Both were brought safely to the NSRI base, where the teenager was assessed and found unharmed.
NSRI has commended van Niekerk for his rapid response and bravery, which were instrumental in preventing a tragedy.
