Early goal can snuff out Flames

Durban - Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba has a simple message for his men ahead of Saturday afternoon's clash with Malawi at the Absa Stadium - let's wrap it up early.

With the home side enjoying a 3-1 lead from the first leg of the Cosafa Cup final in Blantyre last weekend, a goal in the first half on Saturday would almost certainly see Malawian heads dropping.

With the Flames given little chance of winning by the same score in South Africa to force extra-time, Mashaba knows that scoring first would effectively end the contest.

To this end, Mashaba has been concentrating on crossing and finishing in training this week. He may also bring in Jimmy Kauleza for Lebohang Kukame in a bid to improve the attack.

Of course, fans will look to Patrick Mayo to give Bafana that early goal after the SuperSport United forward had a hand in all South Africa's goals last Saturday.

"I plan to continue from where I left off last week. I really did not expect to score two goals, but I'm delighted I did," said Mayo after the final training session on Friday.

"Although we have a handy lead, we are not going to sit back and defend. We must take the game to them and score early to wrap it up."

Meanwhile, Malawi coach Kim Splidsboel alleged that the SA Football Association had not provided proper training facilities for his side.

He said his players were taken for an hour's drive around Durban before reaching the ground, and the day before they had to plead with AmaZulu to allow them to use the local club's training field after the two sides pitched up at the ground at the same time.

"We did not expect to be treated like this," he said.

A Safa representative responded that the clash with AmaZulu was unfortunate and that the problem on Friday resulted from confusion over the name of the training venue.

The Malawians were taken to Glenwood High School when they had been booked to train at Glenwood Old Boys Club, which saw Splidsboel's plans being delayed.

It seemed lost on the Malawi coach, though, that his association did not even allow Bafana to train at the match venue before the first leg last week.

And there was more drama at the end of the press conference held by Splidsboel when the South African Football Players Union (Sapfu) staged a picket outside the hotel to highlight the need for players' rights to be recognised.

With support from fellow Cosatu unions, the players' organisation demanded that Safa sign a recognition agreement with them.

Another picket is planned outside the stadium on Saturday.
