Weekend festival of Sevens action

The Golden Lions club rugby activities get going this weekend with the club seven-a-side tournament at Nic Diederichs technical High School in Krugersdorp.

Play begins at 8am on Saturday morning and ends with the Cup final on Sunday at 4pm.

There will be 20 teams involved and all the Lions clubs will be involved (the sides from the Northwest Union that play in the local leagues are not included). More than 120 games will be played over the two days.

The event, which will kick off the season on the first weekend of February every year from now on, is hosted by Harlequins. The West Rand Club does not have a ground at the moment due to their Jan Lotz Stadium home in Krugersdorp being taken over by Kaizer Chiefs, so they will be using the school's fields and the Union has allocated the tournament to them so that they can use it as a fund-raising venture.

Golden Lions manager of amateur rugby Wynand Moolman says that the Lions Sevens selectors will be at the event and they will be choosing a squad that will be training every Wednesday night ahead of the interprovincial Sevens competition that gets going later in the season.

Moolman also said that kick off of Wednesday's game between the Lions Vodacom Cup team and the touring Russian national team at Roodepoort Rugby club has been changed from 6pm to 4pm.
