Westville are kings of the water

Durban's Westville Boys' High emerged as overall champions at the St Benedict's Aquatic Festival held over the weekend.

Six schools participated in two swimming events - a standard boys schools gala on Friday and in the Ekurhuleni 1200 swim at Germiston Lake on Sunday - and five in a round-robin water polo tournament on Saturday.

Bloemfontein's Grey College left their water polo players behind because they hosted their own tournament, while Pretoria Boys' High had other polo commitments on Saturday.

Westville have become the top swimming school in KwaZulu Natal in recent years and they blew away the opposition in the gala, finishing 91 points ahead of second-placed St Benedict's.

In the process, Westville set no fewer than 14 new festival records, with St Benedict's next best on three new records times.

The final placings in the gala were: Westville 271, St Benedict's 182, Grey College 180, St David's 142, Pretoria Boys' High 119, St John's 71

St David's caused an upset at Saturday's water polo tournament by beating Westville 5-4, which put them in second place behind St John's, who were the only unbeaten side at the event.

St John's beat Westville 5-2 in the final game of the day to clinch the polo title.

Westville's Chad Ho is the national open water swimming champion, so it was not surprising that he was first out of the water in the boys 14-17 age group at Germiston swim on Sunday.
