Lions launch talent spotting campaign

The Golden Lions Rugby Union and the Gauteng High Schools Rugby Association this week announced the coaches that will be in charge of the schools teams playing in interprovincial tournaments next year.

Saheti's Gollie Gouws will be the head coach of the Under-18 Craven Week side, assisted by Bobby McCloud of Fochville and KES' Carl Spilhaus.

The head coach of the Under-16 team that will be going to the Grant Khomo Week is Linden's Francois Vosloo. His assistants are Andrew Nel (Marais Viljoen - forwards) and Bafana Nhleko (Jeppe - backs).

The decision was made on the basis of applications and presentations to a selection panel.

In particular, the coaches needed to be named ahead of the start of the Union's talented Players Project (TPP) which get rolling next week.

The Union have appointed a full time coach to run the TPP this year - who will meet the coaches next week to discuss the curriculum of the programme which begins a week later.

The initial group of players invited to the TPP is made up of all those who represented the province at Under-18 and Under-16 level last year and who will still be at school next year.

Lions manager of schools and youth rugby, Hans Coetzee, stressed that there are no closed doors. "A player's physical ability and skills level will be evaluated and, if he meets the standards, he will be invited to attend."

The TPP runs on Friday afternoons from now until February next year.
