Amazulu were devastated on Tuesday by news of the death of rightback Jan Masoeng Sillo in a car accident.

The 33-year-old star apparently lost control of his Opel Kadett on the road between Bethlehem and Harrismith at about 3am. The car overturned, killing him.

He had apparently been on his way back to Durban after spending time with his family in Botshabelo.

"We are obviously very saddened by this incident," said AmaZulu team manager James Dlamini.

"Unfortunately, God decided to call the player.

"We are all devastated - the players, management and directors.

"This sort of thing has happened two seasons in a row to us. Last season, we lost striker Siyabonga Mkhwanazi to a sudden death."

Sillo featured in AmaZulu's 2-2 draw with BidVest Wits in the Absa Premiership at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday and would have driven to the Free State after the game.

Club spokesman Philani Mabaso said they had not been aware of the trip, although the player had seemingly been trying to make the usual 9am start for training yesterday when he was killed.

Sillo joined AmaZulu four years ago.

He is survived by his pregnant wife and one child.

Mabaso said the funeral arrangements would be finalised once a delegation from AmaZulu visited the player's family, which would probably be today.

He said it was not clear at this stage whether the club's next match, a knockout encounter against Golden Arrows at Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday, would be called off.

He said fixture congestion might force the game to continue as scheduled.
