Leal, Middendorp in line to replace Igesund

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp and ex-Moroka Swallows coach Julio Leal are on a shortlist of possible replacements for Gordon Igesund at Maritzburg United.

This follows the resignation of Igesund on Tuesday after he sensed that the club's management were not satisfied with the team's results in the first round of the Premiership which came to an end at the weekend.

Maritzburg are sitting in 12th position from three wins, seven draws and five losses, but management believe they should be higher in the standings after beefing up their squad considerably before the season began.

Igesund quit just after lunchtime on Tuesday with management not needing to push him. They simply accepted his resignation and started thinking of possible replacements.

Club chairman Farouk Kadodia says German coach Middendorp and Brazilian Leal immediately came to mind because of their availability and because of their reasonable track record in South Africa.

Leal parted company with Swallows at the end of 2008 while Middendorp has been out of a permanent job for longer.

Two other coaches are on the shortlist at present but can't be named because they are currently contracted to other clubs.

When asked if former Ajax Cape Town coach Craig Rosslee was one of the two, Kadodia tried to evade the question by saying Rosslee was currently committed to Orlando Pirates as assistant coach.

Kadodia said that apart from the ones already thought about, they would probably get applications from other coaches once news of Igesund's departure spread.

Igesund did not want to say much about his resignation, except that there were "personal reasons" for it and that he wished the club everything of the best for the future.

"People can speculate as to the reasons for my resignation, but that's up to them. I just felt a need to get away at this point," he said, adding that he might move back to Johannesburg before getting his agent to find him another job.

Kadodia said they wanted Igesund's replacement to be experienced in South African football because this would help the person settle in quickly.

Maritzburg's next match will be against SuperSport United in Pretoria on November 21.

Salie Adams, Igesund's assistant, will serve as caretaker coach until a new coach is appointed. Kadodia said they would try to bring in somebody by the weekend, which would give the person about a week to prepare for their first match.
