Parreira's boys will go for the jugular

There has been a lot of fuss about the 100-day countdown to the World Cup and the Bafana Bafana players want to add to the celebrations by producing a sound performance against Namibia in Wednesday night's international friendly at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Urged by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to start "focusing 100 percent on the World Cup" in line with the countdown, the players believe they will be ready to handle whatever the Namibians can muster as they bid to stay in Parreira's World Cup plans.

"We are looking forward to going for a win. We can't underestimate them. It will take 90 minutes of hard work to get a win," said left midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala.

"We all have to do well because nobody is guaranteed a place in the final squad for the World Cup. I think Namibia will come at us to prove they are a good side.

"They'll do whatever they can to win the game."

The South African defence is likely to show the most changes tonight with Parreira trying out some "forgotten" faces and new blood at the same time.

Little-known Belgium-based player Anele Ngcongca is set to play at rightback, veteran Bradley Carnell will be at leftback while the centre will be marshalled by Bevan Fransman and Siyabonga Sangweni, who recently broke into the team.

"We have to not worry about the opposition and worry about our own game.

"We must show what we can do," said Carnell, who has been recalled to the national team after a long absence.

"There are a lot of new faces in the squad. I just hope to slip back into the fold and make it seem like I have never been gone."

The new faces included a surprise showing by Brazilian star Cafu, who trained with the players on Tuesday before predicting South Africa would make the last 16 of the World Cup.

A two-times World Cup winner, Cafu was in town for the 100 days celebration at the stadium earlier in the day, which featured Fifa and Safa bosses, and the players were thrilled to have him play with them.

"It was a memorable moment," said Carnell. "It's an honour to be on the same field as a player of that stature."

From his side, Cafu said South Africa deserved to host the World Cup and he was "confident it is going to be one of the best in history".

The Namibians' attack will be spearheaded by two players based in the PSL, Rudolf Bester of Maritzburg United and Henrico Botes of Platinum Stars.

They also have a few players who feature in the South African First Division, including midfielder Paulus Shipanga of Bay United and defender Hartman Toromba of Vasco da Gama.

In four clashes they have managed one victory over South Africa. Not many people will see that number doubling this evening.
