AmaZulu plan to give all

Amazulu skipper Pere Ariweriyai knows what his men need to get past Ajax Cape Town in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday night, and it is nothing less than their "A" game.

With Ajax fancied to reach their second successive final in what is the League Cup for Premier Soccer League teams, Ariweriyai says they will have to play at their very best to put AmaZulu in a cup final for the first time in 18 years.

The Durbanites upset Kaizer Chiefs in the 1992 final of the old Coca-Cola Cup, but uSuthu have generally under-performed since the launch of the money spinning Premier Soccer League in 1996.

However, AmaZulu's towering captain says they take a lot of confidence into tonight's match and want to stretch their current winning run to six games against opponents that they have not beaten in the league this season.

"We are feeling very upbeat. The mood in the camp is very good, after advancing to the semi-finals. We are all excited and looking forward to playing in a final," he said.

"We believe we have to take our chances and defend the right way. We are just going to give it our best shot and leave the rest to God."

AmaZulu are pleased to have all their key men available, including recently injured leftback Marc van Heerden, and know they will have to keep their concentration for 90 minutes against opponents who can move the ball around quite neatly while aiming to supply Stanton Lewis in attack.

Coach Neil Tovey echoed his skipper's sentiments, saying the only way to overcome the Urban Warriors was to play equally well in attack and defence.

"We know there are going to be moments where we dominate and moments where they dominate. We must just make sure we make our domination count.

"We are going to be industrious, which is what we need to be against Ajax.

"It is important to put a trophy in AmaZulu's cabinet.

"Ajax are the favourites, they are a good Cup team, but we have to take them out," said Tovey.

"We are not scared. We are going into the game with a lot of confidence. Past results and history do not count. It is all about who scores the most goals on the night."

While Ajax have greater Cup experience, they are not at full strength for the clash.

Midfielder Lance Davids and forward Thulani Serero are on national duty in Brazil, while several defenders are either injured or suspended, including Clayton Daniels and Denis Ivanovs.

However, coach Foppe de Haan has said that if his team can replicate their quarter-final performance against Lamontville Golden Arrows last weekend, he will be confident of them advancing to the final against either Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates, who meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The full quota of 50 000 tickets for that game have been sold out.

Some fans have complained about the increasing of the gate fee to R40 from the usual R20, but the PSL have responded that this was necessary due to the high cost of staging a match at the new stadium.
