Saru tackles rugby ticket freebies

SA Rugby has complained to the chairman of Parliament's sport and recreation committee about MPs and government officials demanding free suite tickets for rugby matches.

In a letter to Butana Komphela, Saru president Oregan Hoskins said: "We are experiencing difficulty with parliamentary officials demanding suite rugby tickets and parking... Rugby certainly values the support of all our governmental officials but due to contractual obligations to our sponsors it is not always possible to accommodate every request we get... I would humbly request your assistance in establishing a system to manage the issue."

Hoskins said the Test match allocation allows four complementary seats to government officials and parliamentarians in the presidential suite, distributed in descending order from highest ranking government official.

On Friday parliamentarians received the letter from Saru with an application form which they would need to fill in if they wanted to watch a rugby match free.

An official in the Saru office said Saru was put under a lot of pressure by government officials requesting free rugby tickets.
