Two dashing Durban men are over the moon at being chosen to represent KwaZulu-Natal in this year’s Mr South Africa competition.
Amro Gabriels, 22, and Bohang Moeko, 25, will be vying for the opportunity to be crowned as the country’s most exceptional man.
“It’s a very exciting time. It’s a big thing for the province because, compared with cities like Cape Town, we are always the underdogs,” said Gabriels.
An equally excited Moeko said clinching a spot among the 12 finalists was rewarding after the long selection process.
“I had been anxious about it because the elimination rounds were tough,” he said.
“It’s one of the happiest moments of my life as it was the culmination of about six months of hard work. Knowing how long it took to get a step closer to achieving my dreams feels amazing.”
Both men said they were in it to win. They believed they had everything it took not only to be the envy of every guy in the country, but to make a difference as well.
For Morningside’s Moeko, a quantity surveyor, walking away with the title would help him to show youngsters that dreams do come true through hard work and dedication.
“Being Mr South Africa is a platform where one can become an ambassador for South Africa through community work and so forth,” said Moeko.
North Beach resident Gabriels said his empathetic nature had propelled him into community outreach projects, such as mentoring street children.
“I feel with people and I help wherever I can. These qualities are promoted by the competition and they resonate with me.”
Reigning Mr South Africa Andre Govender also hails from Durban.
Gabriels and Moeko are professional models. Moeko is showcasing designers’ work on the runway and Gabriels holds a string of titles, the most notable being Mr KZN 2013.
Both are following diet and exercise plans before the big day late next month.
