Durban - The eThekwini Municipality is steaming ahead with plans to build outdoor gyms and upgrade school playgrounds in an effort to get people to live healthier lifestyles and create “open spaces” for communities across the city.
This was revealed at an eThekwini Sport Development and Recreation Department summit held on Friday where the city’s five-year sport development plan was spelt out.
Delegates to the summit were told that one of the municipality’s key focuses would be infrastructure development building, levelling and maintaining sport fields.
The city also hoped the developments would have a knock-on effect in creating job opportunities for some youth who will be trained as fitness coaches as part of the programme.
The programme is also offering scholarships to children from the age of 13. This year, 30 scholarships would be awarded to deserving recipients, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, head of the Sports and Recreation Unit said.
“We continue to plead with people to look after the infrastructure we build,” he said.
