Durban — A woman was arrested after opening a false hijacking case on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
On Tuesday, Bravo Six Security shared important information about a hijacked white Isuzu bakkie to Umkomaas SAPS detectives. On Wednesday, Bravo Six Security shared a success report.
Law enforcement involved in the operation included Bravo Six Security, Umkomaas SAPS detectives, Umzinto SAPS K9 and Umkomaas SAPS.
Bravo Six Security said the vehicle was spotted in the Roseneath area and two males were seen in the vehicle heading towards Moodley’s Spar in the suburb. Quick action by members resulted in the vehicle being spotted in the parking of Moodley’s Spar while the occupants went into Spar. Members kept observation and after some time the suspects arrived and jumped into the vehicle. A takedown was conducted and both the suspects were arrested.
“Upon good detective work, it was established that a false case was opened by the complainant. All evidence and statements were obtained and the owner was arrested and charged for defeating the ends of justice. It was established that she could not pay for the said vehicle, so she proceeded to sell the vehicle and then report it hijacked while the bank was looking for the vehicle to repossess.”
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Umkomaas police have arrested a 42-year-old woman for defeating the course of justice after she opened a false case of carjacking on July 15.”
She appeared at Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on July 23.
In many instances, police have appealed to the public to refrain from opening a false case because it is a criminal offence and it is punishable by law.
In 2022, police arrested a man who faked his own kidnapping and car-jacking and also found that his car was used in a business robbery. After an intensive investigation, police discovered that the complainant was never at the shop where he alleged that he was hijacked and his vehicle was used in a business robbery at Brighton Beach.
In another incident, a 25-year-old man was arrested while attempting to open a case of carjacking after he allegedly robbed three men after offering them a lift. The suspect was arrested when he arrived at the police station to open a fake carjacking case.
