Durban — A former Msunduzi Municipality employee will know his fate in October when he is sentenced for corruption.
KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court convicted Nhlakanipho Wiseman Dlamini, 46, on two counts of corruption on Tuesday.
Ncane said it is alleged that in January 2020, Dlamini was employed as a fleet supervisor in the Msunduzi Municipality.
During that period, Dlamini demanded a sum of R100 000 from the vehicle tracking service provider, to process the payment of R1.5 million that was owed by the municipality. The accused only processed a payment of R1m and continued to demand an amount of R100 000 to process the remaining balance owed by the municipality.
Ncane said a corruption case was reported at Pietermaritzburg police station. The case docket was allocated to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Crime Investigation for further exploration. An intensive investigation was conducted, leading to Dlamini’s arrest and his being charged with corruption.
“The accused appeared in court several times, until Tuesday, August 27, where he was found guilty and convicted on two counts of corruption,” Ncane said.
“The matter was remanded to October 15 for sentencing.”
Meanwhile, in an unrelated matter, in March this year, Bethuel Mthethwa, 56, was arrested for fraud and corruption at Jozini Local Municipality when he was mayor.
It is alleged former municipal manager, Lonwabo Maka, 57, created a need for a youth upliftment programme called the “Joy” project. A R5m payment was made to a company called Njabulo Landman Construction and Mining owned by Mandlenkosi Matutu, 43. Maka allegedly used his position of authority and compelled employees in the finance department to make the payment knowing that it was unlawful to do so as there were no services rendered.
