The Department of Basic Education will host the National Teaching Awards, however there is a twist – everyone will be involved in choosing their stellar teacher on October 5.
In a video announcement on social media platforms, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube said that she is excited to launch the #MyTeacher campaign, which seeks to appreciate educators who go beyond the call of duty and make real impact in the lives of others.
“October is a special month in the department because it is a month that we get to honour and celebrate our educators because they are the very backbone of our education system,” she said.
There are so many passionate educators, who work tirelessly in difficult environments. But they show up and they change lives, she said.
She also said that one needs to nominate such a teacher, who could be recognised for their service at the National Teaching Awards.
Applicants are also required to upload a 60 second video of themselves, mentioning their teacher’s name and school. In the video. They should also say why they believe that the teacher is the best.
She said that applicants must tag the department their nominations with #MyTeacher, and that the details are on the DBE page.

Since her post earlier this month, there have been 32.5k views, 127 reposts and close to 500 likes.
Director: Educator Human Resources, Leticia Munday, while speaking on the teacher demand and supply in the country, said that teachers are the lifeblood of any education system and having enough qualified teachers lies at the heart of achieving the aims of the Education 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 4.c.
