Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal unite for strategic interprovincial collaboration

In move towards enhanced governance and developmental progress, the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provincial governments, under the stewardship of Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Premier Thami Ntuli, convened a two-day strategic session. 

The sessions were held at the OR Tambo Government Civic Centre on Monday and Tuesday, with the aim to establish a blueprint for interprovincial collaboration, in improving the delivery of essential services to their respective communities.

The meeting drew various provincial leaders, including Members of the Executive Councils (MECs), Directors-General, Heads of Departments, and CEOs of public entities from both provinces.

The objective was to share innovative strategies and best practices, setting the stage for an enduring partnership that promised to enrich the lives of residents in both provinces.

The gathering marked a critical milestone in bolstering cooperation between South Africa's two economic powerhouses, as outlined by the Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act of 2005.

Together, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal contribute nearly half of the national GDP and are home to approximately 45% of the South African population.

During the sessions, consensus was reached on several key collaboration areas.

The governments were preparing to share innovative approaches to transform underused state assets into revenue generating properties aimed at reversing urban decay and stimulating economic revitalisation

Day two of the session was dedicated to bilateral discussions and site visits, with delegates from KwaZulu-Natal exploring pivotal Gauteng projects relevant to the benchmarking topics.

A commitment to modernising essential infrastructure was also prioritised, focusing particularly on the pivotal Durban Free State Gauteng Logistics Corridor, as well as the ambitious Gauteng-KZN Rail Link project.

To facilitate commerce and bolster security, the provinces pledged to exchange information and crime fighting solutions, prioritising the safeguarding of the N3 highway the main economic artery linking Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal from disruptions and criminal activities.

The dialogue also covered the topic of developing a framework for an enhanced disaster management collaboration.

This includes sharing best practices, establishing early warning systems, and coordinating response strategies to better protect communities from natural and man-made disasters an initiative that underscored the shared commitment to the welfare of all residents.

Premier Lesufi emphasised the session's significance, stating: “This benchmarking session signifies a new era of proactive cooperation, in which the two provinces will pool resources and expertise to overcome shared challenges.

"Together, we will unlock new opportunities for economic growth and improve the quality of life for all our residents.”

In response, Ntuli articulated the potential of the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration extends beyond logistics.

"Gauteng serves as the nation’s industrial and financial hub; KwaZulu-Natal provides ports, petrochemicals, agriculture, and tourism assets. Together we account for more than half of South Africa’s GDP.

"We must craft a joint interprovincial framework for coordinated logistics upgrades, shared investment promotion, and cultural exchange.”
