A breakthrough has been made in the search for victims of the flooding that occurred in Shiyabazali, New Hanover, on Sunday, with the body of one of three missing people being discovered.

The devastation, which has predominantly impacted the dwellings of the local community of foreign nationals, has prompted calls for urgent attention as local leaders from the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands mobilised to assist those affected.

According to Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for the local Department of Transport and Human Settlements, the situation is dire. He confirmed that their MEC, Siboniso Duma, was on-site in Ward 2 on Monday morning, together with local mayor Mandla Zondi, to assess the situation.

“The MEC has indicated that the verification process will commence to gauge the full extent of the damage. Initial reports suggest that over 100 people have been affected,” Sibiya stated.

Duma has expressed his condolences to the family of the victim, whose body has been recovered, and promised to continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.

As families begin to grapple with the losses and displacement from their homes, the department is prioritising short-term housing solutions for those without shelter.

Meanwhile, Duma highlighted the challenges facing the community, with many residents cut off due to flooded roads and washed-away bridges.

“Our dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) is working tirelessly to ensure the safety of motorists during this challenging time,” he remarked.

He added that this team is actively coordinating road closures and monitoring major routes throughout the affected regions. The MEC also emphasised collaboration, requesting that stakeholders in the freight industry work alongside the RTI to address truck movement in the area.

With Durban being a crucial logistics hub, plans are underway to escort trucks and vehicles to alleviate congestion on major highways such as the N3 and N2. Authorities urge the public to stay informed by following weather reports closely and to consider rescheduling travel plans if conditions warrant such precautions.
