Dr John Kani elected as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Dr John Kani has received congratulatory messages after joining the Oscars.

South African veteran actor Dr John Kani has been elected to serve as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, also known as the Oscars. 

Taking to X, Kani shared the good news with his followers; “I promise to serve this institution with honesty and integrity.”

The “Black Panther” actor is one of only three South Africans to be invited to this global circle, alongside the late Moonyeenn Lee and producer Anant Singh.

Membership for the Academy is by sponsorship and candidates do not apply. Candidates must be sponsored by two Academy members from the branch to which the candidate seeks admission.

Membership reviews take place once a year, in the spring. Each candidate who receives a favourable endorsement from the appropriate Branch Executive Committee will be submitted to the Board of Governors for final approval and invitation to membership.

As the good news spread, many have taken to social media to congratulate the legendary thespian on his latest achievement.

A year ago the director and playwright, for being honoured with the esteemed Order of the British Empire (OBE) by His Majesty King Charles III.

Dr Kani’s award for “services to drama” acknowledges his extraordinary contributions to the arts in South Africa and internationally.

The Order of the British Empire is one of the most prestigious honours awarded by the United Kingdom, it recognises individuals for their outstanding achievements and service across various fields, such as the arts, sciences, charitable work, and public service.
