Summer Walker has apologised to her South African fans after her headlining set at the ‘In The City’ festival in Pretoria was cut short on Sunday, October 5.
Taking to X, Walker wrote: “South Africa, I love you guys so much. You guys were the best show. I wanted to do the full hour, but the venue and SA police didn’t allow me to; it was not my fault. I love you guys, I'll be back soon.”
Her Instagram statement went further, pointing the finger at the event promoter: “@steynent, as the promoter of the event refused to pay the JOC, so it messed up the whole show even though we were early. Love you guys until next time.”
Fans were left frustrated after she only performed for around 30 minutes instead of a full set.
Comments on her social media posts reflected the disappointment.
“These promoters didn’t do justice; they did her wrong @summerwalker. We stand with you.” Others asked for a solo concert with Walker alone as the bill, so she could deliver the songs her fans were hoping to hear.
On the Steyn Entertainment platforms, audience members also voiced their anger.
Lauren Mkhungela wrote: “30 Minutes of Summer Walker... You guys must be kidding! What kind of headline act has half the set of the supporting artists? Feels like we were scammed!”
Another fan, Inkhanyishead, added: “We want our money back - disregard for the people who paid and got there on time! Disrespectful to the headliner - horrible planning.”
Tamjam posted a longer criticism, accusing the promoters of poor planning and failing to account for venue restrictions: “Surely someone on your team could have anticipated the concert running late. If overtime was such a big issue, why wasn’t it built into the cost or discussed with JOC beforehand?”
Walker is one of the leading contemporary R&B singers.
She broke through with her debut album “Over It” in 2019, which featured hits such as “Playing Games”, “Come Thru” with Usher and “Stretch You Out” with A Boogie Wit da Hoodie.
The album was certified platinum and established her as a major voice in R&B.
Her sophomore album, “Still Over It”, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included collaborations with artists such as Cardi B, SZA, Lil Durk and JT of City Girls.
The project was praised for its candid songwriting, exploring themes of love, heartbreak and personal growth. Walker has also featured on several notable collaborations, including Drake’s “Girls Need Love (Remix)” and Khalid’s “Eleven”.
Despite her growing global reputation, Walker has occasionally faced criticism for show cancellations and performance issues.
However, her fan base remains strong, particularly because of the relatability of her music and her honesty with supporters.
“Independent Media Lifestyle” has contacted Steyn Entertainment for comment on the festival and will update this story once a response is received.
