South African rapper Emtee has expressed doubts about his upcoming performance at "Back To The City", hinting that he may be sabotaged on stage.
The annual hip hop festival is set to take place on Saturday, October 11, at Mary FitzGerald Square in Newtown.
Hip hop enthusiasts are already hyped up for the event, but the “We Up” hitmaker is not as excited for his performance.
The rapper took to X and posted, “Watch them either cut my performance set or lie and say I was late.”
He later posted a sarcastic comment saying: “Can’t wait for my 10 seconds performance at Back To The City.”
An X user @IzzyLucid, who was with Emtee during his 2022 "Back To The City" performance, chimed in, seemingly verifying that the performance cut has indeed happened before.
“I remember when they did that in 2022 - we were literally on stage, Emtee had the mic in his hand, and they claimed we were late, so they cut his set,” he said.
The “Back To The City” festival, which is now in its 19th year, will be celebrated under the theme “Power in Numbers”, uniting generations of hip hop lovers, artists and cultural pioneers.
It’s set to be one of hip hop’s biggest nights with trap artist Travis Scott taking over FNB Stadium on the same night.
American rapper Lupe Fiasco is set to headline “Back To The City” this year, joined by more than 100 big local artists ranging from 20 DJs to 40 graffiti artists, among producers and MCs.
Some of the local artists include Cassper Nyovest, A-Reece, Kwesta, Big Zulu, Emtee, Maglera Doe Boy, Touchline and Wordz & MashBeatz, to name a few.
“Back to the City has always been about community, culture, and creativity. For 19 years, we’ve built a space where hip-hop thrives, and 2025 is going to be our most powerful edition yet,” says festival founder Osmic Menoe.
“Independent Media Lifestyle” reached out to “Back To The City” organisers for comment on Emtee’s claims but had not received a response by the time of publication.
