WATCH: South African slang 'Grootman' leaves UK podcasters confused and laughing

For some people, watching others react to videos online is pure entertainment, and yes, it’s giving a whole "Inception" vibe, but "Shxtsngigs_Reacts" is one of those channels that fans absolutely love.

Their latest video had them reacting to South African slang, and naturally, they couldn’t do it without laughing their heads off.

These UK-based podcasters, Fuad and James, are known for their unfiltered, hilarious takes on viral videos. But when they tried to decode “Grootman”, a term that’s as South African as a braai, it was a whole comedy show.

The way they tried to pronounce it had me in stitches. James tries to make sense of the term by using it in a sentence and said, “Listen here, you Grootman, this is how you do it.” For context, “Grootman” is Afrikaans for “old man,” a term we use casually to refer to an elder or someone who’s been around the block a few times.

But here’s the thing, in our country, we often use it for someone who’s not even elderly. It can be a playful way to call someone bossy, serious, or just “that guy” in a particular situation. So, hearing them attempt it in English? Hilarious.

It ended up sounding more like they were summoning Groot from "Guardians of the Galaxy".

"Who in the history of society has ever said, “Listen here, old man, this is how you do it?” James hilariously asked.

Of course, South Africans had to comment. One viewer wrote, “As a South African, I am in pain listening to this 😂,” while another said, “Bro said ‘grootman’ like he was talking about a 'Guardian of the Galaxy'.”

Even celebrities joined in on the fun.

@lebo_jojo_mokoena, star of "The Real Housewives of Johannesburg", wrote, “🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I’m dead!!!! It’s not an English word.”

Sports journalist Melissa Reddy also weighed in with, “🤣😭💀 Justice for my South Africa. This was a crime against our lingo.”

The way they tried to piece it together with zero clue about context made it even better. This is exactly why we can’t have nice things… in English. Our slang is just that much fun when someone else is learning it for the first time.

If you thought Shxtsngigs_Reacts struggling with “Grootman” was cringe, just wait until you remember when Charlize Theron embarrassed the entire nation on Hot Ones by saying “Jou ma se ****. 

For context, it’s Afrikaans, it’s vulgar, and it’s definitely not something you casually drop on international TV.

The moment was equal parts hilarious and mortifying. Theron, clearly caught up in the heat of those spicy wings, thought she was teaching the host some South African slang. Instead, she taught the world one of the nastiest insults imaginable.

Cue every South African cringing in unison. I mean, it’s the kind of “oops” that lives rent-free in your brain for weeks.

Hearing it spat out by "Hollywood royalty" on a global platform? It’s just too much. And watching Theron struggle with pronunciation and the intensity of the phrase is peak cringe.
