“If you make it in the USA, you can make it anywhere,” says Khuzani Mpungose, the celebrated South African maskandi artist.
Recently, he was honoured with the title of ‘Best Independent Artist Africa’ at the Hollywood & African Prestigious Awards (HAPAwards).
Khuzani was nominated in two categories: Best Independent Artist (Africa) and Best Male Artist (Africa).
He travelled to the United States to accept his award during a prestigious ceremony held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
The HAPAwards recognise outstanding talents across various genres, including music, film, comedy and fashion.
Established in 2017, these awards have become a global platform that amplifies African excellence, connecting creatives from the continent with their counterparts in Hollywood.
Following his achievement, Khuzani took to Instagram to express his gratitude to his fans, stating: “If you make it in the USA, you can make it anywhere, because conquering the USA means you’ve already faced the world’s toughest test. From here on, no dream is too big and no stage too far.”
Ahead of his win, Khuzani reflected on the significance of being recognised on an international stage like the HAPAwards.
He described it as a blessing and a testament to the progress of Maskandi music.
“This recognition belongs to every supporter who believed in the journey of authentic African sound,” he shared.
Khuzani further elaborated on the honour, explaining what it means not only for him but for African artists as a whole.
“These nominations are proof that our sound, born in villages and carried through generations, can stand proudly on global stages. It shows that African music, in its truest form, doesn’t need translation - it speaks straight to the heart,” he added.
Khuzani’s journey is a remarkable story of persistence, innovation, and leadership.
Born and raised in Nkandla, he has become a household name across Africa, consistently selling out major venues and setting new attendance records in cities such as Durban, Johannesburg, and Pietermaritzburg.
His annual Gcwalisa Spring Picnic All White and Blue Nation Festival events attract tens of thousands of fans, demonstrating that Maskandi music is not only alive but thriving in a modern, youth-driven market.
Over the past decade, Khuzani has shattered multiple industry barriers.
His albums have consistently achieved platinum status, earning him one of the largest followings in African traditional music.
He stands out as one of the few independent artists who have maintained commercial success without major label backing, showcasing his creative independence and strong connection with his audience.
