Actress Brenda Ngxoli is set to portray the late music legend Brenda Fassie in a new four-part documentary series titled 'Vulindlela'.

SABC1 has confirmed Brenda Ngxoli as the lead in “Vulindlela”, a new four-part documentary series based on the life and legacy of Brenda Fassie.
The award-winning actress will take on the role of the “Weekend Special” hitmaker, telling the story of her rise to fame, personal challenges, and ultimate redemption through her iconic album “Vulindlela”.
Ngxoli, whose career spans over two decades, is known for her versatility on both television and film. Many will remember her from “Home Affairs”, where she made her television debut in 2005 and later from hit shows such as “Rockville” and “The Queen”, to name a few.
Her ability to embody complex characters has made her one of South Africa’s most respected performers, and fans are excited about her portrayal of Fassie.
Taking on the role of Brenda Fassie marks a major moment in Ngxoli’s career. Fassie’s story remains one of the most captivating in South African music history, a tale of talent, turbulence, as well as triumph.
The documentary will highlight her extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the country’s most beloved and controversial stars.
The series will also feature Sphamandla Dhludhlu as producer and musician Chicco Twala, a central figure in Fassie’s career.
According to the channel’s media statement, “Vulindlela” will delve into uncovering Fassie’s fearless spirit and the creative partnership that shaped her unique sound through re-enactments and rare interviews.
“The story and legacy of Brenda Fassie can never be forgotten. Brenda Fassie is a prime example of chasing your dreams and challenging the status quo. Challenging adversity and crafting your own path to success,” said Ofentse Thinane, channel head at SABC1.
The series aims to capture both the brilliance and the chaos that shaped her artistry, with Ngxoli and Dhludhlu expected to bring depth and authenticity to the portrayal of Fassie and Twala.
“Vulindlela” is set to premiere on SABC1 on Saturday, November 15, at 8pm.
