Fans are not impressed with Amapiano DJs Kelvin Momo (real name Thato Kelvin Ledwaba ) and Samukelo "Sam Deep" Mavuso for their drag racing stunt on a public road.
What the artists thought was a moment of competitive fun turned out to be a disappointing one to their fans, who thought their move was reckless and risky.
In a recent video, their cars were seen lined up at an intersection, ready to take off.
The two are seen having a chat from their car windows while revving their engines before speeding off.
Different angles of the video spread quickly on social media, and many fans felt the pair had crossed a line.
Some fans said they were shocked that the two were openly showing off what looked like dangerous behaviour on a public road.
“Drag racing in a public road? @kelvinMomo_ and @realsamdeep, this is reckless behaviour and can put people's lives in danger, learn from Jub Jub's mistake, please. We respect you as artists, set a better example,” said X user @Lihlenconco.
Another user, @_Jimmy_30, added: “One hand on the steering wheel and you're racing? Why are you even racing on a public road, no seatbelts...ey niggas”
Others pointed out that the video was posted proudly on their platforms without any concern or regard for how unsafe it is for other people on the road.
“I hate people who race on public roads so much. Putting us all in danger! Go to the nearest hell, man,” said @SoyabongaNYZ.
The online anger grew even stronger when comparisons to Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye began trending.
Many netizens referenced the 2010 crash where Jub Jub and his co accused Temba Tshabala, were drag racing in Soweto before ploughing into a group of school children.
Four children died, and two others were left with serious injuries. Fans reminded the amapiano stars that Jub Jub’s downfall began with what seemed like a moment of fun on the road before it turned into a tragedy that changed lives forever.
Others felt the pair should face consequences for their stunt, saying the law should treat them the same way it would treat any other driver seen drag racing on a public road.
A few went as far as calling for immediate charges, noting that South Africa has lost too many lives to irresponsible driving for such behaviour to be brushed off as entertainment.
“@JoburgMPD arrest these clowns,” said @Gweez88. Another fan said, “Please arrest these people. Jub Jub did the same and ended up killing people. We don’t want stats anymore.”
As the backlash continues, neither Momo nor Deep has addressed the criticism.
