As ya’ll know, Cardi B just gave birth to baby number four.

While most new parents are told to rest, bond and figure out how to survive on two hours of sleep, celebs have a tendency to give us updates on everything from their whereabouts to how the tiny human is adjusting to life outside the womb.

The rapper turned her newborn son’s umbilical cord into a heart-shaped gold pendant. Because, apparently, being your kid isn’t enough - now you get a literal piece of them in gold. Celebs are truly out here doing the most random things.

In the early 2000s, Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton reportedly wore each other’s blood in vials as necklaces. Delulu (delusional) much!

The process was shared on the Encapsulation Specialist’s Instagram, where fans got a peek at the making of the keepsake.

First, the umbilical cord is shaped into a heart, then dehydrated, and finally dipped in gold chrome.

The specialist explained: “The umbilical cord is the very first connection between a mother and her baby; the lifeline that nourished, protected and carried them through every moment of pregnancy.

"Creating this keepsake is always such an honour, but doing it for Cardi and her sweet baby again means the world to us. Turning something so meaningful into a piece that can be held, remembered, and cherished forever is one of the most special parts of what we do.”

It’s actually more common than most people think, though it’s definitely a niche trend!

Using body parts to make jewellery or keepsakes falls under the broader category of “memorial jewellery” or “memento mori” jewellery, which has been around for centuries, though the modern versions are far more personal and sometimes… unconventional.

From Victorian-era hair jewellery to modern pieces made from baby hair, teeth, nails, fingerprints, footprints and even cremation ashes.

Placenta encapsulation and keepsake pendants are also growing trends among parents who want a tangible reminder of those early, fleeting moments. Cardi B just took it next level with gold.

While the rest of us are still figuring out swaddling without panicking, people are turning cords into gold pendants. What a time to be alive.
