Grammy Award winner and internationally acclaimed composer Lebo M has initiated a $20 million lawsuit against Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Mwanyenyeka. The legal action, filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, arises from alleged damaging misrepresentations, defamatory conduct, and unlawful commercial exploitation related to the renowned Royal Praise Chant, “Nants’ Ingonyama”.

The controversy began when Mwanyenyeka, in a viral social media video, made claims about the chant while appearing on a talk show hosted by Godfrey and Akbar Gbajabiamila. During the segment, Mwanyenyeka stated that “Nants' Ingonyama” translates to “Look, there is a lion, oh my God!”

This interpretation has been met with significant backlash, with Lebo M asserting that it diminishes the cultural and spiritual significance of the chant, which is deeply rooted in Zulu and Xhosa traditions.

Lebo M's lawsuit cites multiple causes for legal action, including misleading representation under the Lanham Act, defamation per se, trade libel, and tortious interference with prospective economic advantage. “Nants’ Ingonyama” is most notable for its prominent feature in Disney’s “The Lion King,” and is not merely a viral catchphrase, as Mwanyenyeka suggests. Instead, it represents Praise Imbongi, a revered form of royal praise poetry that plays a vital role in African cultural identity.

"This is not merely a legal matter - it is a cultural correction," stated Tshepo Mboni, Lebo M's global spokesperson. "‘Nants’ Ingonyama’ is not a punchline, nor a casual reference point for exploitation. It is a sacred Royal Praise Chant, deeply embedded in African identity, spirituality, and storytelling. We are taking a firm and uncompromising stance against any form of misrepresentation, defamation, or unauthorised commercial use that undermines its significance and Lebo M’s legacy."
