Tyla’s “Chanel” era just keeps getting bigger.
The South African star has officially scored two nominations at the upcoming BET Awards, landing spots in both the “Video of the Year” and “Viewer’s Choice” categories for her hit single “Chanel”.
The nominations add to what has already been a massive run for the song since its release in October 2025.
While “Chanel” became a viral hit online thanks to its dance challenge and global streaming success, the music video quickly became a conversation of its own, especially in fashion circles.
Released on the same day as the single, the visual leaned heavily into vintage Chanel archives, with Tyla wearing rare Karl Lagerfeld-era pieces sourced from collectors and luxury vintage dealers around the world.
Styled by her longtime stylist Ron Hartleben, the video featured standout archival pieces, including the iconic white Chanel hula hoop bag from the brand’s 2013 spring/summer collection, a quilted black bomber jacket from 1991 and accessories previously worn by supermodels like Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.
Speaking to “Vogue” at the time, Hartleben explained just how difficult it was to source some of the pieces featured in the video.
“The rental costs for these things are astronomical,” he said, adding that many collectors trusted the team with “museum-quality pieces”.
“She’s wearing these belts that are each like $20,000 (over R16,000) at full retail,” he revealed. “I did have to sign my life away in case things broke. But nothing broke!”
Rather than putting Tyla in complete runway looks, Hartleben said that the goal was to mix the archival fashion with her own style and personality. And clearly, it worked.
Beyond the visuals, “Chanel” has also continued to perform strongly. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 94, becoming Tyla’s third solo entry on the chart after “Water” and “Push 2 Start”.
The song also debuted at number one simultaneously on both the US and UK Afrobeats charts, making Tyla the first artist to achieve that at the same time.
On Spotify, “Chanel” quickly climbed the global charts while the song’s TikTok dance challenge spread across various markets, including Asia and the Middle East, with even K-pop stars joining the trend.
In April 2026, the single officially earned Gold certification in the United States from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Hosted by comedian Druski, the 2026 BET Awards will air live on Sunday, June 28 and will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
