Soula Boy Tell 'Em
***
If you are not from the MXit generation and you are an old- school hip hop fanatic, then Soulja Boy Tell 'Em (some name) will irritate you more than a recurring rash.
It is obvious the young rapper has his young fans in mind when he makes his music and the odd formula seems to be working for him.
The hot single Kiss Me Thru The Phone has already proven that his previous Grammy Award nomination was not a fluke. Clearly, his chants are aimed at party freaks who thrive on two-stepping on their tippy toes. His sound of choice is largely influenced by his Southern roots, but the lyrics are largely shallow.
Take Gucci Bandana, for instance. It sounds like a bad entry for a Gucci commercial competition. Crank That, the hit that lost to Kanye West's Good Life at the 2007 Grammys, comes out on CD for the first time as a bonus track. Soulja Boy Tellem is a beef track which tells of the 19-year-old's fight for acceptance in the industry.
Here is some advice on how to enjoy this album: just blow up the volume on a good system, that way you hear the beats and not his yip-yap. - Munyaradzi Vomo
