Durban, stand up! There’s a new voice making waves, and she goes by the stage name of De Rose.
Born Thandeka Cele, she is poised to reshape what it means to be a young artist in South Africa.
We have watched talents like MaWhoo, Babalwa M, Zee Nxumalo and Thatohatsi rise in recent months. Now it is time to also listen to Rose’s music.
If you are not yet familiar with her, she is the voice behind the 2025 hit “Lutho” by DJ Jaivane, SMAKI 08 and Wesley Keys.
At 24 years old, Rose is a singer, songwriter and composer from Umlazi, Durban.
Her music blends soulful storytelling with the rhythm of amapiano, reflecting her upbringing and creative journey. She embodies a combination of warmth, strength and authenticity, representing a generation of South African musicians shaping the continent’s sound.
Raised in a household where music and creativity thrived, her passion for sound was nurtured from an early age. Today, she collaborates with some of South Africa’s most talented artists, yet remains grounded in her roots.
Her songs draw from personal stories and lived experiences, offering listeners a window into her life while also resonating on a universal level.
Recently, Rose released her debut solo single, “Emsotra”, through Haus of Culture, distributed by Gamma. Africa. The track is taken from her upcoming project, “9 to 5”.
“As a girl born and raised in Umlazi, when I went to Soweto for the first time, I felt like I was still in my hood - just a different language,” Rose explained. “Besides that, I felt like I belonged. Emsotra is home.”
The single was produced by Thebza and Frank Mabeat, who created a soundscape that merges soulful chords, deep basslines and hypnotic percussion.
“Thebza and Frank Mabeat made it magical,” she recalled. “I wasn’t feeling well that day, but the moment I stepped up to that mic, I knew what I wanted and how I wanted it.”
“You can take me out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of me,” she adds, highlighting the influence of her roots on her music.
Supporting artists like Rose is more important now than ever. Here’s why:
