Renowned Congolese-born, South Africa-based hitmaker Tresor, also known as Mukengerwa Riziki, recently received the prestigious Courage of Art award at the 2025 Res Publica International Awards.
The accolade celebrates individuals and organisations whose work exemplifies civic courage and the advancement of global harmony.
This year, the Res Publica jury turned its attention to four areas of influence: peace and solidarity, environmental harmony, ethical journalism and the courage of art.
Taking to Instagram, the musician and producer wrote: "I was deeply honoured and humbled to receive The Courage of Art Award from Premio Respublica in Italy. This recognition means so much more than an award - it’s a reminder of why I create, and who I create for."
He continued: "Through art, I’ve found a way to shift the narrative of refugees and African youth - to tell stories of resilience, beauty, and hope. This is a lifelong purpose, and I look forward to many more great things to come ❤️."
The "Wale Wale" hitmaker left his hometown in 2007 at the age of 17 after completing high school and the death of his parents, and after months of travelling, settled in Durban, where he worked as a car guard by day and a security guard by night.
He is now one of Africa’s most respected musicians, and his story continues to inspire countless young Africans to dream beyond borders.
His win shines a light on how music can become a bridge for peace, unity and dialogue.
The Res Publica jury commended Tresor for his "artistic and courageous talent to guide public opinion in the struggle to end war and violence in Africa", affirming his music’s role as a vessel for peace and collective healing.
The 2025 awards ceremony took place on October 25 in Mondovì, Italy, where Tresor joined an esteemed group of honourees, including the Carabinieri, the elite police military group of Italy, who were awarded for their outstanding service to their nation.
