The crowd cheers, the lights pulse and the beat drops - DJ Law-T is in her element.
At just 21 years old, Thiara Naidoo, professionally known as DJ Law-T, is rapidly carving her name into South Africa’s music scene.
Hailing from Merebank, Durban, she balances life behind the decks with life in the lecture hall, proving that passion and discipline can coexist.
“I strive to excel in everything I do,” she said, reflecting on a journey that merges music, academics and leadership.
Alongside her growing career as a DJ, she is completing her final year of an LLB (Honours level) degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Her commitment to excellence extends beyond the dance floor: she serves as a Vice President of the Golden Key International Honour Society for 2025 and is a student representative for the South African Society for Labour Law (SASLAW).
“Music and education have both taught me about dedication, balance and the importance of staying true to your goals,” she explained.
DJing began as a pastime, but it quickly became a driving force in her life. “Performing allowed me to finance my studies while pursuing something I love,” she said.
Over the years, she has performed at top Durban venues and major events like the Hollywoodbets Durban July, taking her sound to Johannesburg, Richards Bay and Pietermaritzburg.
Her talent has earned her recognition, including wins at the Battle of the DJs in 2022 and 2023, third place in the Best of Durban Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 and the recent Best DJ 2025 award at the Top of Merebank Business Awards.

Music has always been part of Law-T’s world.
“Growing up, music was everywhere - at family gatherings, community events, or just playing in the background,” she recalled.
She described herself as an open-format DJ, blending amapiano, gqom, ‘80s and ‘90s hip hop and R&B and dance music.
“I love the freedom of being able to connect with any crowd,” she said.
Still, her heart lies with South African music. “There is something incredibly special about our local sound. It is vibrant, soulful and full of rhythm and character. I take pride in showcasing it whenever I perform.”
Her first live performance left a lasting impression.
“The connection, the energy, the adrenaline - it was something I had never felt before. That moment solidified my decision to pursue DJing seriously.”
Inspiration comes from many sources: family, friends, fans and women breaking barriers in the industry. “They remind me why I started and push me to keep going.”
Every set brings new lessons.
“Every venue, every crowd is different. Each club has its own energy, and every audience responds differently, which keeps me inspired,” she explained.
Memorable experiences include her debut Johannesburg performance, live radio sets and sharing stages with DJs like DJ Tira, Tyler ICU, Kabza De Small and international acts from India.

Her mobile disco, Disco TNT, allows her to bring personalised sets to weddings, birthdays and corporate events. “Every performance teaches me something new and deepens my love for what I do,” she said.
Winning Best DJ 2025 at the Top of Merebank Business Awards was a defining moment.
“Being recognised by my community was humbling and empowering. It reminded me that all the late nights, sacrifices and dedication have been worth it,” she said.
The award also motivated her to uplift other aspiring female DJs. “In a male-dominated industry, it is empowering to know my work helps pave the way for others.”
Looking forward, Law-T envisions performing across South Africa and internationally while collaborating with brands that align with her energy.
“I want to show that anything is possible with dedication and hard work,” she said. Faith and discipline help her navigate the pressures of performing and maintaining her reputation.
“Staying focused, authentic and surrounding myself with positive influences allows me to maintain my love for music.”
