Music fans are in for a treat as award-nominated producer DJ Lag returns with his latest mixtape, "Southside", which dropped on November 14.
Affectionately referred to as "The King of Gqom", DJ Lag's new project blends traditional sounds from his hometown of Durban with contemporary electronic music.
The 12-track mixtape features songs such as "NgyaSindelwa", with Zee Nxumalo and K.C Driller, "Shona Malanga", a collaboration with Argento Dust and Natasha MD and the mixtape's highlight "Yey'Wena", a collaboration with Amapiano star Vigro Deep.
The project also features contributions from prominent South African music-makers such as DJ Maphorisa, Sir Trill, Ape Drums, Jay Music, NovaBoy, Xduppy, and 2woshort.
"Southside" is a celebration of Lag’s roots and his musical journey, featuring a mix of genres including 3-Step and Afro-Tech alongside Gqom.
"I wanted to celebrate where I am from, while showing where the Gqom sound is going. It's for the people who've been with me from the start and for everyone discovering the movement for the first time," said DJ Lag.
"Building on the momentum of his acclaimed albums 'Meeting With The King' and 'The Rebellion', 'Southside' is both a homecoming and a declaration. Across twelve meticulously crafted tracks, DJ Lag pushes the boundaries of Gqom with the precision of a producer in full command of his craft," read a statement.
"The Rebellion", which was released last year, featured artists Kamo Mphela, Robot Boii and YoungstaCPT, while in "Meeting With The King", DJ Lag collaborated with Amanda Black, Mr JazziQ, Dlala Mshunqisi and The Queen of Gqom, Babes Wodumo.
With only a few hours into its release, "Southside" is already grabbing the attention of fans.
"🙌🙌 Eish!!! You guys. You should be proud of yourself on this. REWIND!!🔂," wrote @theboydoingstunts.
