Junior King, born Dugulth Ferreira, was a rising star in South African hip hop from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
He grew up in Kariega, also known as Uitenhage, a town known for its vibrant dance and music culture.
He tragically died on Thursday, December 11, in a head-on collision on the N1 near Verkeerdevlei, in the Free State. He was 29 years old.
King rose to fame through energetic dance videos and lyrical content on TikTok, quickly becoming both a prominent choreographer and rapper.
Known widely by his stage name Junior King, he made a mark in Afrikaans hip hop while giving a voice to communities often overlooked in mainstream music.
His songs combined Afrikaans and English, bridging cultural and linguistic gaps in the South African music scene. His work often included collaborations with fellow artists such as Kay Medusa, Early B and Luda G.
He released multiple projects on streaming platforms, including the “Danser tot n Rapper” EP series, which consisted of “Danser tot n Rapper”, “Danser tot n Rapper 2” and “Danser tot n Rapper 3”.
His most recent album, “My Revenge", was released earlier this month, just days before his passing, featuring 28 tracks that showcased his growth as an artist. Notable singles include "OKAY, EK WEET" featuring Early B, "DIE GHETTO" and "STALAZA".
Colleagues and friends remember King not only for his music but also for his energy, mentorship and loyalty.
Fellow rapper Medusa shared: “I love you, my best friend. Yesterday we had a heart-to-heart, and all I can remember you saying is ‘ons almal is net geleen vir mekaar,’ and today I lost everything. Your legacy will carry on through me.
"I put that on my soul, on our kids, on everything we’ve built this year. We never die, we multiply. Forever you, Junior King.”
King frequently used social media to connect with fans and collaborators. In one of his final posts, he wrote, “Promised @costatitch & @akaworldwide I’m going to make them proud.”
This sense of dedication and ambition was evident in his work, which continues to inspire artists and listeners alike.
Despite his untimely death, King’s influence on South African hip hop remains. His music, dance and creativity left a lasting mark on the industry.
From TikTok videos that brought joy to his hometown to albums that challenged and entertained, his legacy lives on in the songs, the collaborations and the communities that he touched.
