What started as a chorus that rapper Nasty C wrote for himself during a low moment in his life has now turned into a message of hope and upliftment with a music video that drives the point home.

The award-winning rapper recently released the official music video for “Head Up 2.0”, giving visual life to one of the most personal songs in his catalogue. The video dropped on January 16 and follows the December 2025 release of the 2.0 version of the song, which features the critically acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir.

The original version of “Head Up” first appeared on Nasty C’s September 2025 album “Free”, an album that came with freedom for the rapper as he had gone independent at the time of its release.

The first version of the song did not include the gospel harmonies that now add a different layer to “Head Up 2.0”. According to the rapper, the song has been with him for much longer than many may realise.

“I made this song about five years ago, maybe six,” Nasty C said while on set for the music video. “Back then, it was just a chorus, and that was enough for me. It did exactly what I needed it to do."

He described the song as deeply motivational and something he turns to whenever life feels down.

“A very special song to me, a motivational song,” he said. “A song that picks me up whenever I hit a low. No matter what it is I’m going through, whenever I feel like I’m at a low, I feel like the world is against me, I just have to play it, and I’m back up right where I need to be.”

The song remained unfinished for years. Nasty C explained that he only completed it around eight months ago.

“I didn’t finish it till about maybe eight months ago. I think the time it took for me to finish that song kind of played in my favour because I went through a lot of stuff. There were a lot of ups and a lot of downs, and it gave me a story to tell in the verse,” he added.

Lyrically, “Head Up 2.0” speaks to pressure, expectations and the feeling of being left behind while watching others succeed. Nasty C says the song reminded him to stay focused on his own path.

“It’s a song that reminded me that people will always try and tell me what to do, how I should handle my business and how my career should play out,” he explained. “At the end of the day, what mattered was my vision.”

He added that he also touched on what other people go through when it comes to the pressures of life and feeling stuck.

“Your time is your time. This thing is between you and God. God will make it happen for you when the time is right, so you shouldn’t be too pressured to make it at the same time as everyone else.”

The song is no longer art that uplifts the artist only, but a message that resonates with his fans as well.
