“Youngins” is coming back for its third and final season, premiering this Friday, September 19, on Showmax.

The hit teen drama has built a loyal following since its debut, and this season marks the last chapter for the beloved Olifants Five.

Rising star Lebohang Lephatsoana, who plays Tumelo, sat down with Showmax’s Xabiso Ngqabe and opened up about the show’s impact, the highs and lows of season 2, and what fans can expect from the final season of the show.

Since stepping into the role, Lephatsoana has become a standout voice for the show’s younger audience, particularly queer youth who see their experiences reflected in his character’s journey.

The 23-year-old multi-talented actor shared how much the show has impacted his life.

“It’s been life-changing. A lot of young people, especially queer youth, look up to the characters we play. Playing Tumelo has been an incredible journey, not just because of the story I get to tell, but because of how deeply it resonates with viewers.

“The experience has transformed my life. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. This was my first big break in the industry, and I’m grateful to be telling a story that matters,” he said.

Season two put Tumelo to the test, as he faced a drug addiction that challenged both his character and himself as an individual.

The performer shared that playing Tumelo during his drug addiction took a toll on him, as it was emotionally and physically exhausting. He revealed that he had to go back home to the Vaal in order to recharge.

“I’m usually a high-energy person, but playing someone spiralling into drug use pushed me beyond my limits. Going home helped me reconnect with myself, spending time with family, and doing the things I enjoy.  It grounded me so I wouldn’t lose myself in the role.

“Tumelo on drugs was functioning at a very high level, and I had to match that energy for weeks on end. It was truly challenging, but worth it,” he shared.

What to expect in season three?

The final season of the show promises even more drama, according to Lephatsoana. For viewers who thought Tumelo and Sefako’s relationship hit its lowest point in season two, be prepared for even more chaos this season.

This time, both Tumelo and Sefako are responsible for the problems. Tumelo has previously struggled with insecurity and being unsupportive, especially regarding Sefako’s hidden identity.

Sefako will also be contributing to the issues. In season three, both characters are to blame for the instability in their relationship.

The “Olifants Five” will also face legal trouble this season. Lephatsoana joked about what advice he’d give them, saying: “Honestly, I’d tell the Olifants Five to forget about playing heroes and focus on their education.

“Being the ‘good guys’ has landed them in trouble with the law more than once. While it’s admirable to want to save everyone, it’s not realistic. Just focus on your grades and get out of Olifantsfontein High!”

Reflecting on the end of the series, Lephatsoana praised the cast and crew, revealing that it has been an emotional yet unforgettable journey for the “Olifants Five” and their entire crew.

He shared that he built real friendships on set and praised the cast for their talent and how welcoming they were. He added that since “Youngins” was his first acting gig, he had been nervous, but the team made the experience feel seamless and fun.

With the curtains officially closing, it’s notable that the series has previously earned recognition across the industry.

“Youngins” was nominated for Best South African Streaming Series at the Behind The Scenes Awards, while Kealeboga Masango, who plays Buhle, was nominated for Best Newcomer at the National Film & TV Awards South Africa.

The show took home Media Award of the Year at the 2024 Feather Awards, Africa’s biggest queer award ceremony.
