"The Magic Flute" is set to hit theatres this week.

The Magic Flute

This play follows the adventures of Prince Tamino as he embarks on a quest to save Princess Pamina, and he is only guided by a magic flute throughout the journey and is also accompanied by a bird catcher, Papageno.

While on this journey, Prince Tamino faces trials of love, wisdom and virtue as he uncovers a deeper journey toward enlightenment and harmony.

The opera is also child-friendly as it offers two unique versions for young children who are in primary school, as well as a version that caters for those in high school.

Purpose

This production narrates the story of a Xhosa young man as he tries to navigate his ancestral calling, all while dealing with the complexities of the world.

While navigating the world as well as tradition and culture, he also tries to make people understand what mathematics and science are to the masses.

Moffie

This show follows the life of a 17-year-old teenager called Nicholas van der Swart, who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community and a member of the South African Defence Force, who finds himself forced to hide his true identity in a world where masculinity rules.

This play is an adaptation of André Carl van der Merwe’s novel, and it explores themes of identity, shame and survival in a system built on fear and control.
