After taking “The Michael Jackson HIStory Show” across the globe, South African–born lead star Garth Fields is thrilled to be staging the production in Durban this festive season.

This marks the second consecutive year that the acclaimed tribute show will close out its annual world tour at the TSOGO Globe at Suncoast Casino, with performances scheduled for Saturday, December 20, and Sunday, December 21.

The Cape Town-born entertainer was handpicked in 2023 by renowned tribute producer Johnny Van Grinsven for the iconic role of Michael Jackson.

In the celebrated production, which features a world-class band, dynamic dancers, pyrotechnics, dramatic staging and more than 200 moving lights, Fields captivates audiences as he performs live as MJ.

While singing well-known hits such as “Billie Jean”, “Thriller” and “Smooth Criminal”, along with many other fan favourites, Fields aims to recreate some of the most unforgettable and defining moments from Jackson’s legendary career.

Ahead of his Durban performances, Fields expressed in an interview with “Independent Media Lifestyle” that he is genuinely looking forward to returning to the city.

“The city loves Michael’s music, and they love to come out to see it being performed live, even though these hits were released decades ago,” he said.

He added warmly, “Durban audiences are fantastic. They always surprise me.” Fields explained that he enjoys the connection he has built with the audience over time. “I am excited to see familiar faces again, and I’m excited to bring people together during the festive period,” he said.

The entertainer also hopes to see some of the younger generation in attendance.

“I am excited to see kids come dressed up as MJ to the shows,” he said, adding that he hopes to inspire new fans who may be discovering Jackson’s music for the first time through the production. “I want his legacy to continue for many decades to come.”

Fields also offered a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes as he prepares for such high-energy performances.

“It’s important for me to be able to move around in my own space, which I can claim emotionally and use for meditation,” he explained.

He also emphasised the importance of maintaining his physical and vocal health. “I have to be very disciplined about what I take in, in terms of fluids and what I eat, to ensure that my vocal hygiene is at its optimal.”

Portraying one of the most iconic performers in history comes with inevitable pressure.

To stay grounded and keep every performance authentic and fresh, Fields said that he relies heavily on quiet moments and self-reflection.

“It’s about understanding my purpose, spending time with myself, remembering why I am doing this and staying connected with family and friends.”

While he enjoys performing all of Jackson’s hits, Fields admitted that “Billie Jean” remains his personal favourite.

“This is my favourite solo act, and it’s incredible to get on stage and lock in,” he said.

Ultimately, Fields insists that everything he does is driven by passion. “Everything I do is for the fans and about remembering MJ.”
