The much-anticipated Ballito Big Week 2025 has officially begun at The Lawns in Ballito, KwaDukuza, drawing locals and holidaymakers alike for a festive celebration of music, art and community spirit.

Despite the rainy weather over the weekend, the event has proven resilient, offering Mzansi's music lovers an unforgettable experience filled with a diverse lineup and a jubilant atmosphere.

This year’s festival, which kicked off on December 26, promises to be a treat for attendees, with headline shows set for December 28 and January 1.

I had the pleasure of attending this year's celebration on December 28, thanks to Tops at Spar, and what a night it was!

Though the festivities initially started on a subdued note, the energy magnified as the evening progressed, ultimately filling the venue with excitement as night fell.

Upon entering the vibrant space, festivalgoers were greeted by a plethora of food and beverage stalls. The mantra was simple: eat, drink and be entertained.

This formula certainly held throughout the night.

The line-up featured an impressive array of talent, including Man Q, Xola TSM, JNR Richi, Thakzin, 2wo Bunnies, Uncle Waffles, DBN Gogo and the Major League DJz.

Each act brought their A-game, but here are my highlights from the evening.

Thakzin

On this friendly stage, Thakzin truly stole the show. The rising star in the Afro Tech and Afro House scene showcased his unique sound, which seamlessly blends genres and defies expectations.

With South African and Mozambican roots, his musical journey seems destined for greatness.

Each track was a lesson in new sounds; it was hard not to want to ‘Shazam’ my way through his remarkable set.

JNR Richi

Hailing from Durban, JNR Richi never fails to captivate his audience.

His set was a party starter, injecting energy and lively beats that warmed up the crowd perfectly.

A pioneer in the Amapiano genre, he masterfully combined catchy rhythms with creative production techniques, leaving the audience yearning for more.

Uncle Waffles

Undoubtedly a star, Uncle Waffles commanded the stage with her magnetic presence.

It was a joy to witness her firsthand as she seamlessly transitioned between her hits and nostalgic Amapiano classics.

Her tight choreography and engaging performance style captured the essence of what makes live music so thrilling.

The night wouldn’t have been complete without the dynamic performances of Major League DJz and DBN Gogo, both known for delivering high-energy sets filled with infectious tracks that kept the crowd dancing.

As the festival continues to unfold, all eyes are set on the New Year’s Day show, featuring artists like Dlala Thukzin, Zee Nxumalo, Jazzworx & Thukuthela, Oskido, Micasa, ASVNTE, Givit, and Phiwe Morris - anticipated to create yet another memorable chapter in the Ballito Big Week experience.
